On May 10, 2010, Dr. A.Q.M Reza, Consultant - Cardiology, has successfully performed a Carotid Angioplasty (left) on a 74 year old male patient. This is the second case done in Apollo Hospitals Dhaka. The patient was discharged in a stable condition yesterday afternoon on May 12, 2010.
Carotid angioplasty is a therapeutic procedure aimed at widening narrowed carotid arteries, caused due to fatty deposits called plaques. This procedure helps in the treatment of all carotid and coronary artery diseases, and even congestive heart failure. In carotid angioplasty, a long, hollow tube (catheter) is threaded through the arteries to the narrowed carotid artery in the neck. A filter is inserted to catch any debris that may break off during the procedure. Then, a tiny balloon at the end of the catheter is inflated to open the narrowed area. |
